After serving in the Army Air Corps in World War II, he graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and became a funeral director in 1947.

Became a licensed funeral director in 1979 after graduating from Fairleigh Dickinson University and the American Academy McAllister Institute in New York City. He has earned the designation of Certified Funeral Service Practitioner from the Academy of Funeral Service Practice, is a charter member of the Funeral Ethics Association, and a former instructor in the Funeral Service Program at Mercer County College.
